It is best to talk about cricket first as Canterbury has a good history when it comes to this game. First class cricket is played under the St Lawrence Ground which is home to the Kent County Cricket Club.
The county ground is famous for being one of the only grounds in the world which has a tree near the boundary line. It has a capacity of well over fifteen thousand and first came into existence back in 1847. It has also hosted many international games such as games in the 1999 Cricket World Cup and also the Australia v Bangladesh game which took place in the year 2005.
In terms of professional football the main team is the Canterbury City Football Club which plays its home game in the Safety Net Stadium at Herne Bay. It has a capacity of over four thousand and Canterbury was one of the first teams to be formed as part of a community interest project. The club was formed in 1947and went under reform in the year 2006.
